Paul Scholten Centre Colloquium with Prof. Peter Balint, University of New South Wales, Canberra.

Time | 15:30 - 17:00 |
The ideal of state or institutional neutrality has been widely disparaged by those concerned with the accommodation of diversity. In this paper, Peter Balint defends neutrality as being significantly more accommodating than the oft-favoured respect or recognition of difference. One of the radical implications (and advantages) of his argument is that there is little need to distinguish between mere preferences and deeply held beliefs.
Peter Balint is a Senior Lecturer and Head of International and Political Studies at the University of New South Wales, Canberra. His most recent publication is Respecting Toleration: Traditional Liberalism and Contemporary Diversity (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2017)
Research colloquium, organised by the Paul Scholten Centre, in collaboration with Law & Justice Across Borders.
